Obituary
Rev. W.P. Elliott, 88 years old and a veteran of the Civil War, died at 7:50 o'clock last evening at his home, 1102 Jefferson street, following a decline in health which started last October, when he was ill with pneumonia. Mr. Elliott was born in Morgan county, Ind., on December 12, 1837. He resided in that county until 1861, when he joined the 11th Indiana infantry and served in the Civil war until he was wounded. He was a member of the carck regiment under the command of Lew Wallace. On August 12, he was married to Miss Jane Farmer who preceded him in death by many years. In 1918 he was again married this time to Mrs. Mary Chambers. After being discharged from the army, Mr. Elliott moved to Des Moines county where he engaged in farming. A few years later he moved to Louisa county where he was engaged in farming and was also one of the circuit riders. Later he moved to Kansas and was engaged in the ministry in Kansas City, Spring Hill and Linden. In the 1900, he moved back to Des Moines county has since made his home in Burlington at the residence 1102 Jefferson. He was a member of the First M.E. church. During the five years from 1906 to 1911, Mr. Elliott wrote war stories for The Hawk -Eye, one of these stories, which dealt with his experiences being published each month. Mr. Elliott was the last of the early settlers, who made their home in the Morning Sun and Marsh district. Surviving are his widow; three children, Mrs. Flora Billingsley, of Des Moines, and A.T. Elliott and F.M. Elliott, of Burlington: five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held from the home at 3:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. Lloyd Tennant will be in charge and burial will be made in the Aspen Grove cemetery.
