Charles Ernest Stratton, 71, of 1127 Guenther, suffered a fatal heart in Aspen Grove cemetery Wednesday afternoon, He was stricken just after he had conducted the military ritual at the funeral of a friend, 77-year-old Fred Henry Stohler of Burlington. Mr. Stratton had long been active in the Disabled American Veterans, in which he had held several offices, and the American Legion and Company I Veterans. He was also a member of Grace Methodist church and the Policemens Assn. He was a member of the Burlington police department for 20 years, then worked as a government inspector at the IAAP for eight years before retiring 12 years ago. He was a native of Illinois, born Jan. 12, 1897 in Warren county, the son of Charles F. and Mattie Edwards Stratton. He served in the Army in World War I and in the Navy in World War II. Mr. Stratton married May E. Sovern at Roseville, Ill., July 11, 1917. Surviving: The wife; sons Charles A. and Eugene H. Stratton, both of Burlington, daughters Mrs. Hazel Petty and Mrs. Patricia Bowman both of Burlington, Mrs. Dorothy M. Blake, Dallas, Tex.; sister Mrs. Fred Osborne, Kossuth; 21 grandchildren. nine great-grandchildren. Services: Saturday, 3 p.m. Prugh's Chapel, Rev. Henry T. Hackman, Aspen Grove cemetery. The DAV will conduct military rites at graveside.
