Obituary
Mr. George Randall, one of Burlington's oldest citizens, died at 6 o'clock last evening at Burlington hospital, where he has been confined for several weeks. Mr. Randall was over 81 years of age, having been born at Winchester, Virginia, in 1818. He came to Burlington in the year 1849, over half a century ago, being accompanied by his wife. He opened a retail grocery business on South Main street, and was engaged there for many years. He later conducted for a number of years a grocery business on North Oak street, but retired from that venture eight or ten years ago, and has since not been regularly or actively engaged, During the last six years he has served Sheriff George Smith as bailiff of the grand jury, and had done odd jobs in the employ of the city health department during the summer. His health began to fail rapidly about six months ago, and a few weeks ago he was sent to Burlington hospital. He had lately seemed much improved and it was thought would soon be able to leave his bed, and his death last evening was sudden and unlooked for. It is attributed to heart trouble and old age. Mr. Randall was married three times, his second wife being a Miss Purcell, of this county, and his third wife being Mrs. Ellen Burrus, nee Miss Ellen Ballard, daughter of the late John Ballard. He is survived by three sons and one daughter, Mr. Geo. Randall, of New London, being his eldest son. Mr. Randall was a man of very strong convictions and was active in working in behalf of his convictions. He was always a strong democrat in politics and was formerly strongly identified with the party work. He was ever esteemed as a courageous and progressive citizen and a just and honorable man. Mr. Randall was one of the heirs of the great Merer estate in England, which is yet in litigation, and during the last fifteen years he has spent considerable time in working for his interest therein. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, from the residence of Charles Mesmer, No. 1315 Griswold street.
