Donny Lee Fidler, 60, of Burlington, died at 3:02 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 2008, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born April 8, 1948, in Burlington, he was the son of Bernard "Bus" Fidler and Billye Fidler Hines. On December 23, 1967, he married Linda Fye. They later divorced. Mr. Fidler joined the Burlington Police Department and served as a police officer, acting lieutenant detective and public relations officer. After leaving the police force in 1977, he became an owner and operator of Danny Fidler Transport, Inc. He was of the Methodist faith. He was a 1966 Burlington High School graduate and immediately joined the Marine Corps in July 1966. He served in Vietnam one year as a jet mechanic and received seven combat and meritorious medals, receiving an honorable discharge May 5, 1970, at the rank of sergeant. He graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and enjoyed fishing and boating. Survivors include his mother, three sons, Darrin Fidler of Omaha, Neb., Jon Fidler of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Nick Fidler of Grant Park, Ill.; two grandchildren; one brother, Jim Fidler of Burlington; one sister, Peggy Witt of Oak Grove, MO; nieces; and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, his stepfather and one brother. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. The funeral for Mr. Fidler will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lunning Chapel, with the Revs. Trevor Davis and Dean Graber officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice House.
