Capt. Theodore Waldschmidt died yesterday afternoon at his home on Main street, after an illness of several months with throat affection. He has suffered from this trouble for the last year and a half. About five months ago he went to the Presbyterian hospital at Chicago to have an operation performed upon his throat. Since then he has been confined to his room, where he expired yesterday at 11;50 o'clock. Capt. Waldschmidt was a native of Werl, Prussia. he was born on Nov. 24, 1832. He was the youngest of six children, and came to America in 1853, settling at St. Louis. He removed to Burlington in 1858. For several years he followed the occupation of a traveling salesman for Delahye & Purdy. He was a volunteer in the First Iowa regiment, and enlisted again in 1864 in Company D, forty-eighth regular infantry, and received a captain's commission. He was in the battle of Wilson's Creek and other engagements. He was a gallant soldier, and deservedly honored by his country. After the war he came home and resumed his position with Delahaye & Purdy until 1867, when he and the late Chris Geyer opened the Union hotel. Capt. Waldschmidt remained there for three years, and then went again on the road for Delahay & Purdy. Afterward he was in the employ of C.H. Taeger. He was one of the charter members of Matthies post, G.A.R. and a member of the Turn Verein. in 1865, upon his return from the war, he was married to Miss Elizabeth M. Bertch, and to them were born six children, of whom the following, with the widow, survive him: Mrs. Fanny C. Messmer, Miss Nellie Waldschmidt, Geo. and Theo. B. Waldschmidt. He is survived by two brothers, August, in Germany, and Carl, in Chicago. The funeral will be held from the family residence, 604 south Main street, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
