Shirley Ann Bowman, 73, of Oquawka, Ill., died at 10:55 p.m. Friday, October 16, 2009, at University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Born May 12, 1936, in Indiana, she was the daughter of Paul and Essie Maxfield. On July 30, 1955, she married John D. Bowman in Burlington. Mrs. Bowman was a homemaker. She worked as a secretary 15 years for the Oquawka Water Department, retiring in 1992. She graduated from Danville High School in 1954. She was active in the Oquawka United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Vicky L. Thompson of Burlington; three sons, Michael D. Bowman of Bartlett, Ill., Randy J. Bowman of Columbus, Ohio, and Chris A. Bowman of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; her mother, Essie Hafner of Canton, GA; one sister, Barbara Mercer of Canton; two brothers, Jim Maxfield of Louisiana, and Paul D. Maxfield of Pueblo, Colo.; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and one sister. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka, where family will receive friends. The funeral for Mrs. Bowman will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Turnbull Funeral Home. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial is being established for Oquawka United Methodist Church.
