John Douglas Bowman, age 83, of Oquawka, Illinois; passed away at Rose Bush Assisted Living in Burlington, Iowa on October 3, 2012 at 8:15 am. John was born on March 31, 1931 in Burlington, Iowa and is the son of Charles Douglas and Ruth Ann Hartman Bowman. John was raised in Burlington, IA where he attended local schools and graduated from Burlington High School with the class of 1947. John served the military in the Army during the Korean War. He was stationed in Europe. John married Shirley Ann Maxfield on July 30, 1955 in Burlington, Iowa. She preceded him in death on October 16, 2009. John began worked with the C B Q railroad and later with Burlington Northern Railroad where he worked forty-one years as a locomotive engineer. He retired in 1991. John earlier was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Burlington until moving to Oquawka in 1968. He now is a very active member of the Oquawka United Methodist Church where he served on the church board and sang in the choir. John loved hunting, fishing, and being in the out of doors. He was known for his conservationism. He mentored several generations of hunters and has been known as John "Duck" Bowman. John never knew a stranger and his family was his main thing in life. Surviving is one daughter Vicky L. Thompson off Burlington, Iowa and three sons Chris A. (Jessica) Bowman of Warrenton, VA, Michael D. (Diane) Bowman of Bartlett, IL and Randy J. Bowman of Columbus, OH There are Seven grandchildren and Three Great Grandchildren. One sister survives Mary Dean of Mediapolis, Iowa. Preceding him in death are his parents, wife, one aunt and one uncle. Services: A funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 8, 2012 at the Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington, Iowa. His family will be receiving friends at Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka, Illinois on Sunday from 2:00-4:00 p.m.. A memorial fund has been established for the Oquawka United Methodist Church.
