Marianne Ahrold, 99, of Burlington, Iowa, died Monday, January 20, 2014 at the Burlington Care Center, Burlington, Iowa. She was born on July 8, 1914 in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Valeen Ida Hertzler and Norval Francis Prugh. She married Robert Ahrold in Burlington, Iowa, in 1942. He died on January 3, 2013.
She graduated from Burlington High School and then graduated from Burlington Junior College where she was chosen outstanding girl graduate. She then graduated cum laude from the University of Iowa in 1935. She did graduate work in theater at the Pasadena Play House in California and the University of Iowa. She then moved to Des Moines where she wrote and produced two nationally aired radio shows: The Adventures of Jane Arden and Youth Courageous.
She married Lieutenant Robert Ahrold in 1942 and following WW II returned to Burlington to raise their family.
In Burlington she was very active in community projects. She was one of the founders of Players Workshop. She was president and board member and acted in more than 100 plays on the Players Workshop stage, winning many awards for her acting talent.
Among her many community activities she wrote the Semi-Centennial Pageant performed at Bracewell Stadium. She also wrote the script for numerous benefit style shows. She was also one of the founders of South Hill Park Top O the Town Festival.
She is survived by three children, Robert Liam Robbin (Kyle Warren) Ahrold of New York City, New York, Mari Jill Ahrold of Alexandria, Virginia and Jon Eldon (Linda Kern Schneider) Ahrold of Burlington, Iowa; three granddaughters, Lauren Jill (William) Bailey, Elizabeth Kern Ahrold and Tierney Kyle (Geoffrey) Lorenz; three grandsons, Spencer Ahrold Seibert, Elliot Ahrold Seibert and Eldon Edward (Kate Strembicki) Ahrold; one great-granddaughter, Beatrice Rose Ahrold; one great- grandson, August Liam Bailey; and one sister, Sherry Reynolds of Arlington, Virginia; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; two brothers, Eldon and Burton; and one daughter, Shawn Majella Ahrold.
Funeral services for Marianne Ahrold will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, Burlington, Iowa. Rev. Patricia Cashman will officiate. A luncheon in the Fellowship Hall will immediately follow the funeral service. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at 2:00 p.m..
