Obituary
James "Jim" E. Helmick, 64, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 4:21 p.m. Sunday, February 11, 2007, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. Born July 28, 1942 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of James Raymond and Lela Maude Kimbrough Helmick. On January 4, 1964, he married Karen J. Carpenter in Burlington. Mr. Helmick was a 1960 graduate of Burlington High School. He was an Army Veteran serving from 1961 – 1964. He worked for 35 years at J.I. Case Co., retiring in 1999. He then served as the Administrator of Moose Lodge No. 579. He was a former member of First United Church of Christ where he served on various committees. He attended First Christian Church – Disciples of Christ most recently. As a member of Moose Lodge No. 579 in Burlington, he served in numerous positions. He was president and vice president of Iowa/Eastern Nebraska Moose Association, and was appointed Deputy Supreme Governor by Moose International in 1999 at the International Convention in Toronto, Canada. On May 27, 2000 he was presented the Pilgrim Degree, which is the highest degree in the Moose Association. In addition, Mr. Helmick was a Shriner, member of Patriot Masonic Lodge No. 650 AF&AM, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 150 and also served on the Burlington Baseball Association Board. He was involved in Boy Scouts, Little League and was serving as president of the board for Casebine Credit Union. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Survivors include, his wife of 43 years, Karen Helmick of Burlington; one daughter, Marsha (Lance) Johnson of Burlington; two sons, James (Cielit) Helmick of Jacksonville, North Carolina and Brian (Terri) Helmick of Burlington; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Lexis, Anna, Angelica, Emeline, Hunter and Ava; three brothers, Tom (Sue) Helmick of Burlington, John (Marty) Helmick of Sherman, Texas, and Jack (Debbie) Helmick of Washington, Iowa; four sisters, Mary Hammond of Wapello, Iowa, Lela Tull of Burlington, Helen (Bob) Riley of West Burlington and Patricia (Rodney) Boney of Ector, Texas; one sister-in-law, Kim Helmick of Burlington; two brothers-in-law, Paul Shaefer of Burlington and Bradley Soule of Muscatine, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Maxine Sheafer, Karen Sue Soule, and Carol Warth; and two brothers, Dale Helmick and David Helmick.
