George Tracy Garrett, 31, son of the late J. Tracy Garrett, former editor of the old Hawk-eye and at the time of his death editor of the Hawk-Eye Gazette, died Wednesday night in Veterans' hospital at Coral Gab'es Fla. Garrett had undergone 2 operations for an intestinal obstruction, the first last Friday, and his condition had been listed as very critical since that time. He underwent an appendectomy several weeks ago. He joined the staff of the West Palm Beach Post-Times as a courthouse reporter 3 months ago after working for a short time on the Jacksonville Journal. Garrett was born in Burlington, attended school here and at Grinnell and Missouri University journalism school. He was prominent in tennis, liked horses, hunting, fishing and photography. Before the war he worked as a reporter for the Hawk-Eye Gazette. He saw service during World war 2 with the 136th medical detachment and was transferred to the 1st armored division after he reached Ireland. He went to England, again on hospital duty and landed in France shortly after D-Day. He cam out of the war a captain. His great-great-grandfather, David Rorer, came to Burlington in 1836, built the first brick house in Iowa. His great-grandfather, Joshua Tracy, came here in 1840, was president of the BCR&N railroad. Garrett was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Y-Men's club, and the Episcopal church while he lived in Burlington. He is survived by his widow, the former Marion Renner; 2 children, and his grandmother, Mrs. Mary L.. Tibbetts, Des Moines. His father died April 14, 1941. The body will be brought to Burlington for burial.
