Obituary
Lester L. Zippe, 78, of 2000 Orchard St., Burlington, died at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, 1995, at Fort Madison Community Hospital. Born March 14, 1916, on Huron Island in the Mississippi River north of Burlington, he was the son of August and Mary Elizabeth Kuntz Zippe. On June 6, 1952, he married Mary Kistner in Springfield, Ill. She died March 16, 1968. Mr. Zippe was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. He was retired from Klein Manufacturing in Burlington. On April 8, 1946, he received the State of Iowa Certificate of Valor from Gov. Robert Blue for saving lives in a flood in Oakville. He was of the Protestant faith. He like to hunt and fish and enjoyed the outdoors. Survivors include two sons, Joseph Zippe and Martin Zippe, both of Burlington; one daughter, Nancy Zippe, also of Burlington; four stepsons, Clifford Howard and James Howard, both of Burlington, Clarence Howard of Spring, Texas, and William Howard Jr. of Sedalia, Mo.; six grandchildren; two brothers Harry Zippe and Donald Zippe, both of Burlington; tow sisters, Merlean Marquardt of Oakville and Francis McHenry of Enumclaw, Wash. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter, four brothers and one sister. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday in Prugh's Chapel. The funeral for Mr. Zippe will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Prugh's Chapel, with Chaplain will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by VFW Post 10102.
