Martin Jay "Marty" Zippe 55, of Burlington died at 4:27 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2008, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born August 14, 1952, in Quincy, Ill., he was the son of Lester L. and Mary E. Kistner Zippe. On September 29, 1972, he married Sharon L. Smith in Nashua. Mr. Zippe worked as a machine operator at Champion Spark Plug in Burlington. He was a 1971 graduate of Burlington High School and was of the Methodist faith. He enjoyed the Mississippi River, boating, fishing, hunting, four wheeling, gardening, making homemade wine and music, especially Jimmy Buffett. He was an avid Chicago Bears fan and enjoyed animals, especially his cat, Inky. Survivors include his wife; one brother, Joseph Zippe of Burlington; one sister, Nancy Zippe of Burlington; four half-brothers, Bill Howard, Keith Howard, Jim Howard and Clarence Howard; nieces; nephews; aunts; and uncles. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home. There will be no family visitation. The graveside committal service and burial for Mr. Zippe will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Aspen Grove Cemetery, with the Rev. Bettyanna Bremer officiating. A memorial has been established.
