Obituary
Jeanie Zink, born Jean Ann Paulus, June 29, 1936, passed of a massive heart attack May 6, 2017, in St. Petersburg, FL, where she had been living since 1998. Jeanie, dear daughter, dear mother, dear sister, dear friend and sister/fellow musician was preceded in death by parents Harriet and Laurence (Laurie) Paulus. She is survived by son David Zink (Cheryl Carson Zink), St. Petersburg, FL, Deborah Brown, Madison, WI, identical twin sister, Janet Paulus Huggins, Marietta, OH, brother James (Jim) Paulus (Sharon), Chicago, IL, three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and Roger Zink, father of their children. There was a very warm memorial celebration of Jeanie’s life on June 11 at the Veterans Faith Family and Fellowship Chapel where she attended, and often played for services. Family and many close friends were there to give Jeanie a loving “good-bye”.
Jeanie, along with her identical twin sister, Janet, attended Horace Mann Jr. High School in Burlington, IA, and Burlington Senior High School. Jeanie was a “lifelong” member of Bethany Church in Burlington, and the organist during the 1950's on into the 1970's, and then again in the 1990's after returning to Burlington. She started studying the instrument in high school. When she played the large pipe organ it was wonderful, as though she was actually one with the instrument. . . .a moving experience listening to her playing. Also, playing popular music was another one of her strong suits, with an incredible, facile ear. She played piano in a couple of popular dance/jazz bands in Burlington, with the fun names of The Offbeats and The Blue Notes. Brother Jim remembers those days affectionately, since his time in those bands overlapped Jeanie’s for a year. Jeanie also played organ alongside her mother, Harriet, playing piano, in the Harmonaires at the Burlington Senior Center. Besides her music, Jeanie loved following sports on television, especially her favorite teams, and watching movies with her son David. Jeanie will be very much missed.
There will be a memorial service for Jeanie on Friday, August 11, at 11:00 AM. This memorial will be at Bethany Lutheran Church, 2515 Madison Ave., Burlington, IA. A repast will be in Bethany’s Fellowship Hall immediately after the service. Internment at Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, will follow.
