Mrs. Marcella "Sally" M. Duffield, 91, of West Burlington died at 1:51 a.m. Thursday, April 30, 2015, at Blair House in Burlington.
Born October 20, 1923 in St. Peter, Illinois, she was the daughter of Edward and Kate (Weedon) Abendroth.
"Sally" followed her brother and sister to country school at age 3 and the teacher let her stay. She was a 1940 graduate of Burlington High School.
After graduation at the age of 16, she worked at Burlington Basket Factory where she met her future husband, Herbert Zeller. They married on January 7, 1945 while Herb was still serving in the Army. Herb started a construction company upon his return from the Army and Sally became the bookkeeper and the "gopher". Sally also worked at I.A.A.P in the office for 10 years and then Central Duplicating for 22 years.
Herb preceded Sally in death on November 22, 1974. On January 31, 1976, Sally married Norman Duffield, Sr. He also preceded Sally in death on January 8, 1978.
Sally was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ where she also served as treasurer. She was a charter and 60+ year member of Kings Daughters, a member of VFW Auxiliary, Eagles Auxiliary, and an honorary member of the Eagles Riders Club. She was awarded Iowa Woman of the Year 2011-2012 by the Eagles Auxiliary.
Sally enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and helping with events at the Eagles Club and St. Paul's Church. She also enjoyed having breakfast with her friends at McDonald's and travelling with her daughters, Peg and Donna.
Survivors include two sons, David (Sherry) Zeller of Burlington and James (Carey) Zeller of Bolingbrook, Illinois; two daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Godden of San Diego, California and Donna (Bill) Fryrear of Tucson, Arizona; five grandchildren, Randy Godden, Chris Godden, Shasta Bender, Jessie Zeller-Werle and Meghan Zeller; and six great grandchildren, Sarah Godden, Max Godden, Aiden Godden, Shalynn Fryrear, Marshall Bender and Alexis Werle.
She was preceded in death by both husbands, her parents, her brother, William Abendroth who was killed in World War II and her sister, Elsie M. Lyon.
The memorial funeral service for Mrs. Duffield will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 9th at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Mark Schowalter officiating. Inurnment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Great River Hospice and St. Paul's United Church of Christ.
