Luther Walford Youngman, 86, of Danville Care Center, formerly of Fort Madison and Burlington, died at 1:05 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at the care center. Born April 23, 1918, in West Burlington, he was the son of Arthur L. and Esther A. Larson Youngman. In 1944, he married Eleanor Mae Pershing. On June 1, 1980, he married Lois E. Anderson in Fort Madison. Mr. Youngman was a postal carrier for the Burlington Post Office for 27 years, retiring in 1972. He then worked as office manager and scale master for Medusa Corp. and later Cessford Construction. He also did interior decorating for J.S. Schramm and Co. and Rheinschmidt;s Flooring and worked as a floral designer at Stillman Flowers in Burlington. He was a graduate of Huron High School and Burlington Business College. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, serving from 1941 to 1945 with the rank of staff sergeant. He graduated from Radio and Communication School and served as an air traffic controller. He was a member of the American Legion, Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Moose and National Association of Letter Carriers. He loved the outdoors, fishing and bowling. Survivors include his wife; one son, Tim Youngman of Ottumwa; one daughter, Carol Youngman of Burlington; two stepdaughters, Charlotte Anderson of McDonald, Tenn., and Vicky VanWinkle of Fort Madison; one stepson, Roger Anderson of Fort Madison; and several grandchildren step grand-children,, great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Youngman will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Jane Keel officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Danville Care Center.
