Obituary

Norman John Young, 72, of 1307 N. Eighth, widely know Iowa Mason, died in University hospitals, Iowa City, at 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5. The son of John F. and Minnie Jarquinet Young, he was born Aug. 23, 1904, in Burlington. He married Alice Venghaus june 8, 1929, in Burlington. He retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad July 6, 1970, after 48 1/2 years of service; he was a clerk in the railroad shops. He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, and had been a YMCA member for 64 years. He was a member of the Eagles and Moose lodges and the American Assn. of Retired Persons. A charter member of James A. Guest DeMolay chapter, he held many offices in Des Moines Lodge No. 1, including worshipful master (1942). He was high priest of Iowa Chapter No. 1, Royal Arch Masons, and head of the local lodge. He was a past master of Zerrubbabel Council and commander of St. Omer Commandery. He was monarch of Murad Grotto and charter member and past patron of E.C. Blackmar OES chapter. He had held various other offices in Masonic orders, and had been honored by them on numerous occasions. Surviving: The wife; two daughters, Jacolyn Alice Young, Sacramento, Calif., and Judith Ann Estes, Burlington; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild. Funeral: 2 p.m. Thursday. Zion church, Rev. Dale Hampen; Aspen Grove cemetery with Masonic rites. Memorials to Zion church and Shriners Crippled Children;s hospital have been established at Lunning Chapel.
