Alice Margaret Julia Venghaus Young, 97, of Burlington, died at 9:07 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, at Great River Medical Center. Born July 17, 1908, in Benton Township in Des Moines County, she was the daughter of Edward and Julia Schmidt Venghaus. On June 8, 1929, she married Norman John Young in Burlington. He died Sept. 5, 1976. Mrs. Young was a secretary for Leopold Desk Co. and was in charge of the credit department. She was a 1926 graduate of Burlington High School and also attended Rock Point and Sunny Side schools. She was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ. She served as president of the women's fellowship and on many church committees. She was the world service chair for Zions's clothing drives and chair for the Council of Churches. She was a member of King's Daughters Helene Hertzler Circle and past president of the Des Moines County King's Daughters. She was a member of E.C. Blackmar chapter OES serving as past matron and past grand matron of Iowa. She was a member of White Shrine of Jerusalem, serving as past high priestess of Palestine Shrine No. 11. She was a member of Daughters of Nile in Davenport, a member of Social Order of Beuceant, an auxiliary of Knights Templar in Ottumwa, and a member of Auxiliary of Railroad Veterans. She served as treasurer for AARP No 820 in Burlington. She received the Grand Cross of Colors, Order of Rainbow Girls in Iowa when she became worthy grand matron of OES. She received the community leaders of America Award in 1971 and was Hawkeye Links grand representative of OES in Iowa. She crocheted over 1,000 mittens, caps, scarves and hoods for school children and also crocheted baby blankets. Survivors include one grand-daughter, Kimberly Diamond of Pensacola, Fla.; three step-grandchildren; five great-grand-children, five step-great-grand-children; four GGGrand-daughters; two step-GG-grandchildren; and one brother, Wilbert Venghaus, of Burlington. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two daughters and two brothers. Visitation will be from after 8 a.m. Thursday in Lunning Chapel, where family will meet friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The funeral for Mrs. Young will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Zion United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Dr. Gary Chapman and Pastor Jim Ritters officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established for Zion United Church of Christ.
