Doris J. Young, 89, of West Burlington, died at 5:30 AM Wednesday, September 16, 2015, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born June 23, 1926, in Des Moines, she was the daughter of Myrle Henry Connelly and Hazel Fern Waggnor. She was the second of their nine children. She was raised in the Great Depression, Doris knew early on that she would fight for what she had in life. She left school after the 10th grade to raise her siblings. It was a role that connected them for nearly nine decades. In 1945 she met the love of her life, Gerald Young, while he was home on leave from World War II. On June 5, 1948, they were united in marriage. In regards to her husband Gerald, in her words she "had the best". Gerald passed in 1993. She has eagerly awaited their reunion each day since.
Doris retired from Winegard as a supervisor in 1987.
Her greatest joy in life was her son, Harold Edward Dietsch Jr. and she delighted in her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family. She enjoyed crafting and collecting Fenton glassware and visiting Branson.
Survivors include one son, Harold Edward (Judy) Dietsch, Jr. of Lisbon; three grandchildren, Jamie (Amanda Buehner) Dietsch of Waterloo, Jerry (Megan) Dietsch of Lisbon, and Jean (Luke) Van Wyk of Pella; six great-granddaughters; one great-grandson, two sisters, Geraldine (Richard) Savage of Pacific, MO and Shirley Brockett of Burlington; three brothers, John Connelly of Lodi, CA, Cecil Connelly of Burlington and Junior Connelly of Manford, OK.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her Parents, and three brothers, Keith Connelly, Dean Connelly & Robert Connelly.
Visitation will be from 12:30 PM until 1:00 PM with the family receiving friends, September 18, 2015 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home, 3940 Division St.
The funeral service for Mrs. Young will be 1:00 PM Friday, September 18, 2015, at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home, 3940 Division St with Pastor Larry Dodds officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Doris Young Memorial Fund.
