Ray Anderson Wonders, 84, of Burlington, died at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at Veterans Administration Medical Center, in Iowa City.
Born Jan. 25, 1916, in Oakville, he was the son of Charles and Emma Anderson Wonders. On July 18, 1937, he married Kathryn Leila Callaway in Burlington.
Mr. Wonders was a Navy World War II veteran serving in the European, South Pacific and Asiatic theaters from 1943 to 1945.
He attended Oakville High School and later became at certified welder in Philadelphia.
Mr. Wonders worked in the New Jersey shipyards as a welder before returning to Iowa where he worked as a welder for J.I. Case Co. and was an iron worker in Local 577.
He also owned and operated Wonders Trucking and owned and operated Kate's Cafe in Mediapolis. Mr. Wonders later belonged to Milwright Local 410 and retired from there in 1981.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 579, where he received the fellowship degree in the Legion of Moose, and of the VFW Post 10102. Mr. Wonders also was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson and two brothers.
