C. D. "Tommy" Tomkins, 87, of Burlington, died at 11:25 p.m. Monday, September 13, 2010, in the emergency department at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born April 10, 1923, in Stockport, he was the son of William R. and Jessie O. Standley Tomkins. On August 11, 1945, he married Evelyn Judy Hoffer in Fairfield. Mr. Tomkins was president of Remmers-Tomkins Flight Service and a pilot. He was a first lieutenant in the Army Air Corps, and served in World War II. He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Burlington, the Masonic Lodge, Carthage Lake Club, and Burlington Golf Club. Survivors include his wife; one son, Kenneth D. Tomkins of Dallas, Texas; one brother, Forrest A. Tomkins of Phoenix, Ariz.; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in Prugh's Chapel, where the family will receive friends. The funeral for Mr. Tomkins will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Zion United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Jane Willan officiating. His body will be cremated after the service. The graveside ash committal service for Mr. Tomkins will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Zion United Church of Christ.
