Winifred Edythe Willey, 88, of Burlington, died at 2:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at Burlington Medical Center. Born May 7, 1911, in Galesburg, Ill., she was the daughter of Percy C. and Ada A. Newby Willey. Miss Willey was a 1929 graduate of Burlington High School, and received her bacherlor's degree in elementary education from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught for 41 years, including two years at Huron School and 37 years as a second grade teacher at Prospect Hill School. She retired in 1976. She was a member of First Congregational Church in Burlington, where she sang in the choir and was the church clerk. She also was a member of the Mary Salter Guild, Avidah Circle of King's Daughters (50 years), Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Teachers Society and Retired Teachers of Burlington. She was a hospital volunteer after her retirement. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Phyllis Willey of Burlington, and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The funeral for Miss Willey will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Roy C. Backus officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the First Congregational Church.
