Richard H. Wiele, 82, of Mediapolis, formerly of Burlington, died at 12:10 a.m. Friday, May 9, 2008, of cancer at his home. Born Thursday, December 31, 1925, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Henry C. and Mary Peterson Wiele. On December 27, 1951, he married Marion E. Hunger in Burlington. Richard was an Engineer/Draftsman for the City of Burlington and Des Moines County. He had served as the County Auditor and he worked in the County Treasurer's office. He had also worked at the Iowa Ordinance Plant in atomic bomb production. He was a 1944 graduate of Burlington High School. He attended Augustana College for Music and Iowa State University for Engineering. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II. He was a lifelong member of First United Church of Christ. He was an excellent vocalist. He had performed in the first Steamboat Days, sang for numerous weddings and funerals, and with the Burlington Municipal Band, and in numerous music contests. He represented Iowa at the Chicagoland Music Festival. He was involved in the opening of the Spiderweb. He loved to play tennis, enjoyed horseback riding, and liked the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. He especially loved music. Survivors include two daughters, Lynne Klaus of Des Moines, and Diane Morrison of Mediapolis; one son, David Wiele of Burlington; three grandchildren, Jake Klaus, Savanna Billups, Daniel Morrison; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister. Visitation will be from 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., with the family to receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home. The Funeral Service for Mr. Wiele will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 12, in the chapel of the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home, with Chaplain Jim Luder officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Memorials have been established for Hospice of Central Iowa and Hope Haven.
