Obituary
Donald F. White, 86, of Burlington, died at 10:22 a.m. Monday, August 9, 2010, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born March 11, 1924, in Wapello County, IA, he was the son of Charles Austin and Ella Mabel Proctor White. On April 17, 1954, he married Lorretta V. Manos Gillilland in Lancaster, MO. Don retired from Iowa Southern Utilities after 38 years of service. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War in heavy artillery. He received a bronze star. He was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where he was a trustee and a deacon, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Burlington Aerie 150, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 579, lifetime member of VFW Post 9162, and the American Legion Post 52 Color Guard. He enjoyed playing cards, watching Jeopardy, being with his friends and coffee buddies, and especially spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife, Lorretta; one daughter, Sandra (Ed) Gerst of rural Burlington; one son, Alan (Pam) White of Ottumwa, IA; one daughter-in-law, Diane Gilliland of Rock Island, IL; six grandchildren, Michael (Stacey) Gilliland, Gina (Dallas) Cox, Brett White, Courtney (Benoit) Igne, Austin White, Katie Gerst; one great-grandson, Braden Gilliland; two brothers, Forrest (JoAnn) White of Bettendorf, IA, and Gerald (Carol) White of Buena Vista, CO; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Rick Gilliland; two brothers, Bud and Richard; and two sisters, Doris Lee and Mabel Proctor. Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 p.m., with the family to receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. today at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home. The funeral service for Mr. White will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 12, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), with Reverend Tom Smith and Pastor Dean Benton officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor guard. A time of food and fellowship will be at Hass-Thielen Community Room following the interment. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Great River Hospice House.
