Jack L. Wheeler, 83, of Burlington, died at 11:50 PM Thursday, December 27, 2012, at his home. Born November 1, 1929, in Coatesville, MO, he was the son of Floyd E. and Velma Edith Wright Wheeler. On February 23, 1964, he married Alverta "Bert" Schoene in Burlington. Jack had owned and operated Main Street DX, and then worked at General Electric, Skerik Auto Parts, and was a salesman at Niehaus Motors before retiring. He then became owner and operator of Doris' Tavern. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving two tours of duty. He was of the Lutheran faith. He was a member of Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #579, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Burlington Aerie 150, and VFW Post 10102. He was a St. Louis Cardinal and Minnesota Vikings fan. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Bert; two sons, Larry Wheeler of West Burlington and Jay Wheeler of Utica, IL; three daughters, Tammy Wheeler of West Burlington, Becky Wheeler of Burlington, and Ginger Roth of Wever; six grandchildren, Jesse Smith, Jillian Smith, Victoria Wheeler, Jayson Wheeler, Cole Wheeler, and David Wheeler; four great-grandchildren, Troy and Alyssa Mullins, Laila Smith, and Randy Wagler; two brothers, Ronnie Wheeler of Burlington, and Huey Wheeler of Washington; five sisters, Wanda Houston of Burlington, Portvas "Joy" (Leo) Laue of Danville, Sue Ives of Burlington, Donna Krieger of Burlington, and Laura (Charlie) Marshall of Stronghurst, IL; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Charles Wheeler, Gene Wheeler, Darwin Wheeler, Myron "Speck" Wheeler, and three sisters, Marilyn Wheeler, Gloria Wheeler, and Laviece Jackson.
Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM Sunday, December 30, 2012 at Thielen Funeral Home. The funeral service for Mr. Wheeler will be 1:00 PM Monday, December 31, 2012, at Thielen Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Jason Unzicker officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held at Doris' Tavern following the service. After the funeral service, cremation will be entrusted to Thielen Crematory. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.
