Obituary
A.H. Wedertz, 91, of 223 Barrett street, former toll collector on MacArthur bridge 6 years, died at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Mercy hospital. He had been in failing health since 1940 and a semi-invalid the last 6 years. Wedertz, who spent most of his life here, was born here Sept. 13, 1860, a son of Charles H. and Mary Wedertz, and was married to the late Alice C. Carr. Wedertz was associated with wholesale fruit firms in Omaha, neb., and Marshalltown, but returned to Burlington to help his father, who was in failing health. Wedertz bought an orange grove in Florida in 1916 and moved his family there. In 1920, the family moved to Des Moines where Wedertz was associated with a drug store. He returned to Burlington a few years later. Surviving are one son, Leo J. Wedertz, and 2 daughters, Mrs. George J. Donlan and Josephine Wedertz, all of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Lydia Marie Smith, Burlington; 3 nephews, C. Gordon Wedertz of Chicago, Harry Wedertz of Manitowoc, Wis., and Lester B. Wedertz of Burlington. An infant daughter, grandson and 4 brothers, Charles, Henry, William and Louis, are dead. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Prugh's chapel with Rev. Bruce Masselink officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove cemetery.
