Harry H. Waugh, 85, of 1337 S. Leebrick St., died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 1988, at Burlington Medical Center. Born Aug. 30, 1902, in Burlington, he was the son of Henry and Mathilda Zaiss Waugh. He married Ruth Nutt June 25, 1924, in Burlington. He was an avid amateur radio operator as a youth. In 1922, he acquired his federal radio station operator's license. He was hired by Hawkeye Home Electric Co., Burlington, to become the licensed operator of its radio station, WIAS, Aug. 29, 1922. At that time, he was the only federally-licensed radio operator in the city. He was is charge of the station's broadcasting equipment and served as an announcer of regularly-scheduled concerts and other prorams. He and his brother founded Waugh Brothers, a well-known radio and electric appliance store, Oct. 2, 1926. He retired in 1967. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a long-time member of the Burlington Kiwanis Club, a past member and director of the YMCA and a founding member of the Burlington Sportsman's Club. Surviving are his wife; one son, Harry G. Waugh, Los Alamos, N.M.; two daughters, Jeanne A. Pointer, Des Moines, and Beverly J. Cray, Burlington; one brother, William Waugh, Burlington; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. There will be no visitation. The service for Mr. Waugh will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Prugh's Chapel with the Rev. Robert Dodder officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the First United Methodist Church.
