Obituary
Richard P. Bliss, 90, of Burlington, died at 8:50 a.m. Sunday, December 27, 2009, at Great River Hospice in West Burlington. Born July 8, 1919, in Des Moines County, he was the son of Cecil and Liza Sheppard Bliss. On August 11, 1943, he married Hazel B. McDaniel in Waco, Texas. She preceded him in death on May 4, 2009. Mr. Bliss was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a mechanic for Siegel's Automotive, Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, and the Burlington Bus Barns. He was a member of V.F.W. and enjoyed fishing, yard work, inventing things, his pets, exercise, and watching sports. He was a very proud, yet simple, man. Survivors include one daughter, Brenda (Larry) Larkins of Rockport, Texas; one son, David (Jude) Bliss of Burlington; one gandson, Bret Larkins of Ankeny; one great-grandson, Alex Larkins also of Ankeny. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three sisters, and four brothers. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 30th, in Lunning Chapel. The graveside funeral service for Mr. Bliss will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 31st, in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Randy Langner will officiate. Memorials have been established for Special Needs Foundation of Des Moines County and Great River Hospice.
