Arlan Walker, 89, of What Cheer, passed away Saturday, July 31, 2010, at his home in What Cheer. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 5, 2010, at the What Cheer Christian Church, with Pastor Francis Baumert officiating. Visitation will begin after 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 4, 2010, with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 Wednesday evening at the funeral chapel. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the What Cheer Opera House or the What Cheer Fire Department. Alan Floyd Walker, son of Howard and Fern (Collister) Walker, was born on June 25, 1921, in New Sharon, Iowa. He was a 1941 graduate of What Cheer High School. On May 30, 1943, Arlan was united in marriage to Betty Hookum in Burlington. To this union three children were born, Cheryl, Mike, and Jim. Arlan served as an accountant for the Federal Government at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for over 40 years in Middletown, Iowa. During this time he served as mayor of Middletown for several years. Arlan enjoyed tinkering, puzzles, and going to garage sales. He also served as a Boy Scout leader for several years. His memory is honored by his children, Cheryl Busby of Des Moines, Mike (Cindy) Walker of Burlington, and Jim (Cathy) Walker of Minneapolis, MN; two brothers, Daryl Walker and Gary Walker; five sisters, Dorothea Walker, Doralene Olsen, June Leydens, Jeanine Hartwig, and Jackie Culp; 14 grandchildren, Tara, Nickole, Tres, Kally, Becky, John, Matt, Joe, Brad, Chrissy, Marc, Claire, Amelia, and Sebastian; and seven great-grandchildren. Arlan was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Betty Walker; a brother, Calvin Walker; and a sister, Bobi Hartwig.
