Sanford "Sonny" F. Bliesener, 90, of Burlington, died at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at Great River Medical Center-Klein Center in Burlington. Born August 2, 1920, in Burlington, he was the son of Rudolph and Helen Russell Bliesener. On June 13, 1942, he married Barbara Anita Pohren in Kahoka, MO. Mr. Bliesener worked in sheet metal at K & D Co., in maintenance for Klein Hospital, and retired in 1985 from Burlington Medical Center where he was a maintenance and grounds supervisor for 24 years. He graduated from Burlington High School. He served in the Army with the 714th Engineering Battalion, maintaining the railroad between Fairbanks and Anchorage, Alaska, during World War II. He was a member of First United Church of Christ, Moose Lodge, and American Legion. He enjoyed fixing and selling old cars, helping people with projects, and pheasant and mushroom hunting. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Linda Smith of Walcott, and Robin Miller of Mount Pleasant; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and one sister, Dorothy Bliesener of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington, where family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. The body will be cremated following visitation. Memorials have been established for Special Needs Foundation and Great River Hospice.
