Lyn Wakefield, 84, of Prairie Ridge Care and Rehab in Mediapolis, formerly of Middletown, died at 10;02 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born Feb. 4, 1920, in Promise City, she was the daughter of Cla D. and Flo A. Gray Smith. On nov. 6, 1945, she married John B. Wakefield in Olathe, Kan. He died May 25, 1994. Mrs. Wakefield was a secretary for former Sen. Clark of Wayne County, worked at Sylvania and worked for the U.S. Postal Service for more than 20 years, retiring as post master in Middletown. She was a graduate of Seymour High School in Seymour and American Institute of Business in Des Moines. She was a member of United Methodist Church in Mediapolis and a former member of King's Daughters. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and was an avid reader. Survivors include three daughters, Denys Ackerman and Jan Worden, both of Burlington, and Dawn Hales of Sperry; one son, Greg Wakefield of Middletown; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mrs. Wakefield will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. John Gaulke officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established.
