John B. Wakefield, 82, of 100 Highway 34, Middletown, died at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, May 25, 1994, at his home. Born Aug.28, 1911, in Plano, he was the son of Jesse M. and Hettie E. Long Wakefield. On Nov. 6, 1945, he married S. Lyn Smith in Olathe, Kan. Mr. Wakefield was a coal miner, farmer, government inspector and fireman at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, retiring in 1975 after 30 years of service. He was of the Protestant faith. He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving in the Navy Sea Bees in the Pacific. He was a member of the Iowa Fire Fighters Association. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Denys Ackerman and Jan Worden of Burlington and Dawn Hales of Boone; one son, Greg, of Middletown; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mae Cochran of Seymour. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters. Friends may call after 8 a.m. today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends between 7 and 8:30 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Wakefield will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Lunning Chapel, with Rev. David Rogula officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established.
