Obituary
A woman thrown from her car at the intersection of Locust and Ninth Tuesday night during a 3-auto crash became Burlington's first 1962 traffic fatality. Mrs. Lucille Wagner, 36, of 635 S. Seventh, died of a possible fractured neck, according to Dr. Robert Rowley; county medical examiner, who performed a preliminary investigation. Mrs. Wagner also had severe head cuts, leading police to speculate she was thrown through the window on the driver's side of the auto she was driving. The acciident happened at about 10:30 p.m. Mrs. Wagner was driving west on Locust. Police said she either failed to stop at the Locust street stop-sign or she failed to see the oncoming cars. The Wagner car collided with one driven by Donald Ray Morgan, 25, of 913 S. Central, in the middle of the intersection. Morgan was traveling north on Ninth. After the collision, the Wagner car was struck again by one driven by Henry Joseph Orth, 22, of Rt. 1, traveling south on Ninth. Orth's car struck the rear end of Morgan's car after impact with the Wagner vehicle. Just when Mrs. Wagner was thrown from her car couldn't be determined, police said. Neither Orth nor David K. Milton, 501 Hedge, a passenger in his car, was hurt. Morgan was treated at Burlington hospital for a cut to the head. Mrs. Wagner was the first traffic fatality within the city's limits since April 2, 1960, when 2-year old Karen Kay Peterson of Mediapolis was struck by a truck in the 200 block of N. Main.
