Herman Weinrich, former business man and public spirited gentleman ot Burlington; the founder of the Burlington Vinegar and Pickle works. died this morning in his home in Los Angeles. California.at the age of 78 years. according to a telegram received by his son. O.L. Weinrich, ot this city. Although a resident of California for about ten years. Mr. Weinrich still had many interests here and the same public spirit manifest while he made his home in this city remained while he was away as evidenced by recent substantial donations to both the new city hall and to the Burlington hospital.The career of Herman Weinrich is one of steady business.of successful merchandising, ot strenuous and conscientious endeavor and of splendid achievement. And, he shared this success with others and he remembered and was interested in the city where he resided for so many years, even after he, himself,removed to another state on the Western Coast. Some time ago ho remembered the official city with a donation ot $5.000 to be applied on the money
provided for the new city hall here and he made a like subscription to the Burlington hospital. He has done much, in various ways, in be half of Burlington and was a consistent booster for the progress of this city.Writing recently from California, Mr.Weinrich mentioned that his 'heart is in Burlington" and those who knew him well are certain that the interests of Burlington were his interests. He kept in touch with affairs here through the press and correspondence. Herman Weinrich had an important factor in the building of business in thls city. He was born in Cassel,Germany in 1945 and was seventy eight years old at the time of his death in Los Angeles. He started his business career as a traveling salesman ot boots and shoes in Sweden and in Norway,; traveling in contrast to modern travel as he went by team and by stage over difficult
territory, In 1865. when he was twenty years of age. he was connected with his brother near Yarmouth, Iowa. and he later came to Burlington where he worked in Greenbaum's store. His next step was on the road for
the T. W. Barhydt Boot and Shoehouse and then he went into business for himself. Mr. Weinrich started a general store at Pleasant Grove,Iowa, and then at Brighton, Iowa,and entered business for himself in
Burlington with the establishment of a general store at the corner of Tenth and Maple streets, His next venture was in the commission business and he later founded the Burlington Vinegar and Pickle works.This was in 1876 and his place of business was located on Front street. It was then removed to Third street where the Chittenden & Eastman company is now located and finally to Central avenue and Osborn streets.
He, personally, was largely responsible for the success of this business and he was actively identified with it up to the time of the last location.Retiring from active business but still retaining some interests, he
went to Los Angeles about ten years ago and since that time has made the California city his home. Not alone was he interested in the Burlington Vinegar and Pickle works which he founded. He bad interests,in their infancy, in the Burlington Basket factory and the Northwestern Cabinet company, among others. and has always been a backer of the Burlington hospital and a booster for a new city hall to whlch fund
he contributed.In 1870, Herman Weinrich was united in marriage to Miss Emma Obermann of Muscatine, Iowa, his wife preceding him in death in 1905. Herman Weinrich is survived by five children, Mrs. H, W. Branigar of Highland Park, Illinois; Mrs. E. H.Volger ot Chicago, Ill.: H. P. Weinrich and A. F. Weinrich of Los Angeles, Cal., and O. L, Weinrich of Burlington. He also is survived by one sister here, a sister inCassel,Germany and seven grandhildren.The remains will be cremated and the ashes will be brought to Burling ton at which time services will be conducted.
