Obituary
Yvonne M. Verstrat, 78, of Burlington, died at 8:16 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2011, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born March 7, 1933, in Shawnee, Okla., she was the daughter of Vaughn Hugh and Jasmine Grace Morrow Romberg. On Dec. 4, 1951, she married Paul J. Verstrat in Gainesville, Texas. Mrs. Verstrat owned and operated Verstrat Specialty Sewing for more than 20 years. She did alterations for men's clothing stores and cleaners, and made award letters and lettering on jackets for schools and sporting goods stores. She was of the Methodist faith. She enjoyed gardening, reading, sewing, storytelling, and traveling. She was known for her great cooking, especially her fried chicken. Survivors include her husband; one son, Steven Verstrat of Burlington, one daughter, Karen Harkness of North Aurora, Ill.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sandra Johnson of Holdenville, Okla., and Ann Bowlan of Shawnee; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter, her parents, and one brother. Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home in Burlington, where family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral for Mrs. Verstrat will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Plooster officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established.
