Paul J. Verstrat, 83, of Burlington, died at 12:05 pm Thursday, September 13, 2012, at the Great River Medical Center - Klein Center in Burlington. Born June 29, 1929, in Fairmont, WV, he was the son of Paul and Georgianna Dandoy Verstrat. On December 4, 1951, he married Yvonne Marie Romberg in Gainsville, TX. She died July 2, 2011 Paul worked for Sylvania and General Electric. He was a 1947 graduate of Fairmont High School, Fairmont, WV. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving during the Korean War from September 18, 1950 until September 18, 1954. He was of the Methodist faith. He enjoyed caring for the lawn, flowers, his garden, bowling, going to the casino and collecting McDonald's items. He loved his little dog "Precious" and truly enjoyed traveling along side his wife, Yvonne in their motor home. He was a member of the Golden Oldies and the American Legion. Survivors include one son, M. Steven (Janice) Verstrat of Burlington; one daughter, Karen Harkness of N. Aurora, IL; seven grandchildren, Dianna (Shannon) Todd, Tim (Ann) Klaassen, Jennifer (Tyler) Lomax, Anna (Peter) Roley, John Harkness, Katie Harkness, and Brittany Verstrat; five great-grandchildren, Hallie, Morgan, Ayden, Grace and Kara; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Deborah D. Heffelbower and one brother, Raymond P. Verstrat. Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 1:00 PM with the family to receive friends from noon until 1:00 PM Monday, September 17, 2012, at Thielen Funeral Home. The funeral service for Mr. Verstrat will be 1:00PM, Monday, September 17, 2012 at Thielen Funeral Home with Chaplain David Plooster officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A memorial has been established.
