Edith Phyllis Veerman, 80, of Burlington, died at 3:30 p.m.Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at Great River Medical Center Klein Center. Born Aug. 1, 1920, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Edward and Anna Rieke Veerman. Miss Veerman was a 1938 graduate of Burlington High School. She worked as an executive secretary at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for 16 years, and then attended Iowa Wesleyan College, graduating with high honors in 1958. She then taught second grade at West Burlington School from 1958 to 1982. She was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess, and a member of the mission board, and helped with Bible School. She is survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, two half-brothers, and two half-sisters. Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday in Lunning Chapel. There will be no family visitation. The funeral for Miss Veerman will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Street Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ron Presley officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Oak Street Baptist Church.
