Obituary
Cynthia Louise Vavroch, of Burlington, Iowa passed away at Great River Hospice House on Thursday, November 5th, 2015. She was preceded in death by her brother, Dennis Hagler, and her stepfather, Joseph Johnson. Cindy is survived by her husband, David; children Karissa (husband Brian Prior and sons Davis Fitzpatrick and Bennett Louka), Nathan (Chrissy Heinzel), Justin (wife Jacquelyn), and Jared (wife Lauren and daughter Emery Louise); sister Leanne Rasmussen (husband Mark and daughters Alissa, Eva and Savannah); brother Mark Hagler (wife Deborah and children Aaron and Brittany); father Dennis Hagler (wife Joyce); and mother Patricia Johnson.
Cindy was loved by all because of her endearing authenticity and uncommon ability to listen to, empathize with, and care for those around her. This made her a friend and support system for many. She was driven by principles of family first and a strong faith in God. Though profound in private, she will be remembered by most for her smile and light-heartedness, along with her charming perfectionism, elegant holiday decorations, spontaneous trips, late night conversations, and genuine selflessness and positivity that lasted through her final days.
Cindy was born in Iowa City on February 27, 1953. She attended Iowa State University, where she earned a degree in sociology and family environment, and where she met her husband David. Cindy lived her values through a career in social services and child development; she worked at a youth group home, served as Executive Director of the YWCA Burlington, and taught at Small World Preschool; while balancing the demands of wife and full-time mother of four. She invested her free time in her beloved family and friends, hobbies, and volunteering for multiple local charities. Throughout her life, she attended Trinity Lutheran Church, Harmony Bible Church, and Hope Lutheran Church. She was an advocate for women and children, especially those impacted by trauma or abuse--she wanted all children to be happy, healthy, smiling and laughing.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been created in Cindy's honor to benefit underprivileged and at-risk youth through the Burlington Kiwanis Club and Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.
A visitation will be held at Harmony Bible Church in Danville, Iowa from 5 to 8 pm on Thursday, November 12th. A celebration of her life will follow at Harmony Bible Church on Friday, November 13th at 1:30 in the afternoon.
