Ronald E. "Van" VanWinkle, 89, of Burlington, died at 1:35 PM, Tuesday, August 22, 2006, at the Great River Medical Center, Klein Center in Burlington. Born March 13, 1917, in Coppock, Iowa, he was the son of Clarence Rex and Hattie Mae Turner VanWinkle. On May 3, 1936, he married Edna Faye Harker in Burlington. She died December 18, 1983. Mr. VanWinkle worked at Northwestern Cabinet Company, and was a millwright for the Burlington Basket Company where he had done some design work. He was the oldest charter member of Sunnyside Avenue Baptist Church. He was a Chicago Cubs Fan, enjoyed bowling, playing darts, and woodworking. Survivors include one daughter, Linda F. (Ernie) Voigt of Burlington; one granddaughter, Amy L. Voigt of Springfield, IL; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Furney of Kalamazoo, MI; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will begin at 8:00 AM Thursday, August 24, at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7:00 PM until 8:00 PM. The Funeral Service for Mr. VanWinkle will be 10:00 AM, Friday, August 25, in the Chapel of the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Maurice Moore officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for Sunnyside Avenue Baptist Church and Great River Hospice.
