Born July 18, 1929, in Fort Madison, he was the son of Guy Lewis and Ruth Walker Van Winkle. On March 7, 1953, he married Doris Hicks in Burlington.
He was raised in Wyoming and South Dakota before moving to Burlington at age 12. He was a 1946 graduate of Burlington High School and attended Burlington Junior College. He served in the United States Navy from 1946 to 1948.
Mr. Van Winkle retired in 1992 as a job superintendent for Carl A. Nelson Co. after 42 years of service. During this period he also served as a job superintendent for Smith Construction in Fort Madison, which was owned by Carl A. Nelson Co.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He was an Eagle Scout as a youth and a member of the Keenagers. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Rams and Iowa Hawkeyes. He loved to golf in Iowa and Florida. Above all Lynn was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and will be missed dearly by his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of over 50 years, Doris of Burlington; four daughters, Sally (Jack) Broeg of Burlington, Susan (David) Gahn of Edina, Minnesota, Karen (Mike) Johnstone of Middletown and Janet Van Winkle of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Melvin Hicks of Gladstone, Illinois; and two nieces. His parents preceded him in death. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington.
