Donald Eugene Ullrich, 90, of Burlington died at 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at Blair House.
Born September 23, 1926 in Burlington, he was the son of Walter Arthur and Clematice Flora (Woodard) Ullrich. On May 31, 1947 he married Doris Jean Uffelman in Burlington. She preceded him in death on September 23, 2004.
Mr. Ullrich was a 1944 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Pacific theater control tower operator in the Army Air Corps. He worked for the United States Postal Service for 37 years as a railway mail clerk and in the Burlington Post Office. He was a skilled and prolific woodworker and also wrote hundreds of poems, some of them published.
He was a member of St. Luke United Church of Christ where he sang in the choir for nearly 60 years. He also served on St. Luke's Consistory. He volunteered at Burlington's Welcome Center.
Survivors include a daughter, Lyn (Jeffrey) Springut of Rochester, New York; one son, David (Marcie) Ullrich of Salt Lake City, Utah; one sister, Deloris Blaufuss of Burlington and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his grandson Gavriel Springut, and his sister Doris Dean Ullrich.
The memorial funeral service for Mr. Ullrich will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 22nd at St. Luke United Church of Christ with the Rev. Hannah Ryan officiating. Inurnment will follow at Aspen Grove Cemetery. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the time of service.
