Obituary
Mr. Robert H. Tiemeyer, 89, of Iowa City and formerly of Burlington, Iowa died at 3:50 p.m. Sunday, February 17, 2013, at Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City.
Born April 6, 1923 in Burlington, he was the son of Albert H. and Sylvia Strauss Tiemeyer. On June 13, 1948 he married Evelyn Williams at First United Church of Christ in Burlington.
Mr. Tiemeyer was a Burlington High School graduate, a Burlington Jr. College graduate and received his Bachelor of Science engineering degree from Iowa State University. Robert was a World War II Army veteran having served for 3 years with the 290th Regiment in Germany. Mr. Tiemeyer was a civil engineer, estimator, project manager and co-owner of Carl A. Nelson Construction Co. He also worked for Rheinschmidt Contracting after the sale of Carl A. Nelson in 1980 until his retirement in 1989.
Bob participated and managed many construction projects in the area in and around Burlington. He played a significant role in the construction of the Hope Haven facility and also served on their Board of Directors for many years. In Burlington, Mr. Tiemeyer was the project manager on the main downtown 1st National Bank (now USbank), remodel of First United Church and Buescher Hall addition, JI Case main Office Building as well as the Sterzing's Potato Chip factory and the Catholic School on Roosevelt Ave. In Mt Pleasant, Bob managed many projects at Iowa Wesleyan College including the Science Building, Library, Men's Dormitory and the Student Union.
Mr. Tiemeyer was the project manager for multiple buildings that Carl A. Nelson built on the Western Illinois University and Monmouth College campuses. Bob was project manager on multiple elementary schools, middle schools and factories built in Southeast Iowa and West Central Illinois. Bob built Jack's Discount Stores in multiple locations and did several projects at the Iowa Ordinance Plant in Middletown.
Mr. Tiemeyer was an active member of the Master Builders of Iowa chapter of the Associated General Contractors and served on many of their committees throughout the years.
Mr. Tiemeyer was active in his community. Bob was an active member of the Kiwanis Club and served as their president for one year. Bob served on the board of directors of Hope Haven and the Spider Web. Mr. Tiemeyer was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Elks Club. Bob served as president of the American Little League at Sunnyside Park in Burlington for several years. Mr. Tiemeyer was on the Church Consistory at First United Church of Christ for many years.
Bob was a St Louis Cardinal fan, an Iowa State Cyclone fan and loved to play golf at the Burlington Golf Club or any other golf course that he could find. It was common on Saturdays in the early spring for Bob to head south on Highway 61 in a car full of his golf crazy friends until they were far enough south to find a golf course that was open for the season that would allow them to play. Evelyn and Bob had a winter home in Lakeland Florida that they bought after his retirement that was used primarily for his pursuit of the white ball during the winter months.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Tiemeyer of Iowa City; one son, Jon (Joan) Tiemeyer of Iowa City and one daughter, Lynda Tiemeyer of Pittsburg, Kansas; one grandson, Jason Tiemeyer of Ames; five granddaughters, Jena Tiemeyer of West Des Moines, Jessica (Jason) Ringena of Urbandale, Jilliane (Eddie) Erlbacher of West Des Moines, Nicole Ralston of Scottsdale, Arizona and Danielle (Nathan) Lowe of Pittsburg, Kansas; three great granddaughters, Evyn Ringena, Graysen Ringena, and Aubrey Erlbacher; and three great grandsons, Devon Grosstephan, Kaleb Lowe and Jakob Lowe.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Annette Tiemeyer; son, Russell Tiemeyer and sister, Mary Barngrover.
The funeral service for Mr. Tiemeyer will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 23rd, at First United Church of Christ with the Rev. JudyAnn Morse officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the time of service.
A memorial has been established for Hope Haven in Burlington.
