Obituary
John B. Bishop, long-time Burlington civic leader and former president of The Burlington Hawkeye Gazette, died in Klein unit of Burlington Medical Center at 9:03 pm Tuesday, Oct. 27, after a lengthy illness. He was 77.
Bishop was president of the Burlington Chamber of Commerce in 1965 and 1966. He was a Chamber director for six years.
He also was president and campaign director for the Community Chest, and predecessor of the United Way.
He was president of the Kiwanis Club, in which he was active most of his business career here. He was a trustee of First United Presbyterian Church and a director of the YMCA, YWCA, Red Cross, St. Francis Continuation Care Center, and Memorial Auditorium boards; and held memberships in Elks, Eagles, and Masonic lodges.
A 1927 graduate of the University of Missouri, Bishop entered newspaper work on the Headlight-Sun of Pittsburg, Kan. He moved to Hutchinson, Kan., as a display advertising salesman for the Hutchinson News in October 1933, and later became advertising manager there.
He came to Burlington in 1945 as advertising manager of The Hawk Eye Gazette. On the retirement of Clarence Moody, publisher, Bishop was named co-publisher, and general manager of the newspaper. In partnership with Stuart Awbrey, then editor and co-publisher, Bishop helped manage the construction of the paper’s plant on South Main. He retired from The Hawk Eye in 1967.
He was president of the Iowa Daily Press Association in 1967-68.
Bishop was active in many sports, particularly boating and golf; was a member of several local bowling teams, and was a dedicated fisherman.
He was born Oct. 23, 1904, at Cass County, Mo., to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bishop. He married Maurine Cherry, on May 25, 1929, at Pittsburg, Kan., her home. She died at Burlington April 8, 1970, of injuries suffered in a traffic accident.
Surviving: a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Nancy) B. Heck, St. Louis; two grandchildren; and twin sisters Mrs. Claude Brown, Springfield,l Mo., and Mrs. William Steen, Lee’s Summit, Mo.
Funeral: 10:30 am Monday, Prugh’s Chapel, the Rev. Clifford H. Haskins; Aspen Grove Cemetery.
