George Nelson Zern, 92, of Burlington, died Thursday, December 20, 2018 at Great River Medical Center.
Born June 13, 1926, in Hancock County, IL, he was the son of Enileme D. and Eleanore A. (Smelsor) Zern. He married Arlene Brown August 16, 1953 in Burlington. She died August 26, 2001.
George graduated from Dallas City High School and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He worked for the United States Postal Service for 30 years.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing Bingo at the Senior Citizen's Center, taking bus trips and bowling.
Survivors include son Michael (Mary Jo) Zern of Mediapolis; two grandsons, Jeremy Zern and Ryan (Lori) Zern of Wichita, KZ; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, June Ellis and Jo An Roberts both of Dallas City, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and three sisters.
The graveside funeral service and interment for Mr. Zern will be 10:30 Friday, December 28th at Aspen Grove Cemetery. Rev. Randy Webster will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, December 27th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.
The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites following visitation.
A memorial has been established.
