Obituary
Joe (John Joseph) Skourup, age 98 died on August 10, 2022, in Bella Vista, AR. He was born June 7, 1924, in Manhattan, Kansas. He graduated from Burlington Community High School in Iowa then volunteered for military service.
After serving in the North Pacific Campaign in Alaska, he went to France with the 70th division and was lead scout for Company “G”, 274th Infantry for several weeks and was then a machine gunner. He was wounded by an artillery burst on the Rhine River and spent a year in recovery at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX.
After the war he met Mary Lee Smith, who he married on November 10, 1951. Together they raised four boys who were their pride and joy.
Joe worked thirty plus years for an electronics distributor in Burlington, Iowa and then worked for the Soil Conservation Service.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Wilbur, infant son, Jim, son, Steve, wife of sixty-six years, Mary Lee, and his parents, Wilbur and Rembert Skourup (formally Harshbarger).
Joe is survived by his son, David and wife Christina of El Paso, Texas, son, John and wife Mary Kay of Roseburg, Oregon, son, Dan of Bella Vista, Arkansas, grandchildren, Annie of Chicago, Illinois, Brian of Atlanta, Georgia, Mike of Ft. Worth, Texas and Payton of Palmer, Alaska.
After cremation Joe and Mary Lee will be buried together in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington, Iowa.
