Dorothy Louise Nelson, 96 passed away peacefully on Sunday January 17, 2021 at her own home with her loving family surrounding her. Dorothy was born on July 12, 1924 in Colchester, Illinois to her parents Anna May Duncan and Monta Carroll Duncan. Dorothy was one of six children.
On February 2, 1941 Dorothy married her soul mate Edward Andrew Nelson. They were married for 56 years before Ed’s passing 1997. Dorothy and Ed had 4 children. Dorothy had attended Macomb High School and after her marriage they moved to Burlington, Iowa. In 1952, Dorothy and Ed built their own home in which they lived in for the rest of their lives.
Dorothy was a homemaker for several years and also worked at Grier’s Restaurant in the Depot in Burlington and later worked for the Winegard Company for 16 years.
Dorothy was a member of the PTA, Burlington Firefighters Auxiliary, and was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader. She and Ed enjoyed participating in Square Dancing and Bowling. After retirement they enjoyed traveling south for the winters. Her favorite pastime was playing “80 Cents” card game with relatives and friends.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter Marilyn Bachtel of Burlington, Sister Clara Ann Spencer of Table Grove, Illinois, Son-in-law William Ell of Burlington, 10 Grandchildren, 18 Great Grandchildren and 13 Great Great Grandchildren and numerous Nieces and Nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son Larry Edward, two daughters Beverly Day and Peggy Ell, a Great Grandson Jeremy Day, one Sister Helen Olson, and Brothers, Carroll, Rex, and Richard Duncan.
The funeral service for Mrs. Nelson will be at 2:00 P.M. Friday January 22 at Lunning Chapel with visitation from 12 p.m. to start of services. Interment at Aspen Grove Cemetery following the service.
A Memorial has been established for the Players Workshop, in memory of her daughter Peggy Ell.
