Harmon (Doc) Henry Dochterman, 90, of Burlington, died Saturday, October 9, 2021 at his residence.
Born March 9, 1931 in Kahoka, Missouri. He was the son of Edgar A. and Edith M. Dochterman. They moved to Carthage, Illinois when he was young, graduating from Carthage High School in 1949.
He married J. Coleen Mosley on November 5, 1950 in Carthage, Illinois. She passed away January 8, 2019. They were married 68 years.
Survivors include three children; Sheila Kaye Crowner of West Burlington, Wm. R. Randy (Tracy) Dochterman of Burlington and James Alan (Pam) Dochterman of West Burlington; eight grandchildren, Amy (Jeff) Burkhart, Andy (Julie Biggieri ) Crowner, Scott (Meredith) Dochterman, Eric (Nicki) Dochterman, Keri (J.B.) Birk, Ben Dochterman (deceased), Courtney (Kevin) Gunn and Kaylee Dochterman; nineteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Coleen, grandson Ben Dochterman and sister Norma Dochterman.
Harmon served in the National Guard in Illinois. His unit was activated and assumed into the US Army where he served in the Korean War with the rank of Sargeant. He was the Fire Direction Chief of the Howitzer cannons.
Upon returning from Korea, he worked for Alexander Lumber in Carthage. The family moved to Burlington, then West Burlington in 1962. He worked at, and later managed many lumberyards, including The Big E in West Burlington, Fullerton Lumber, Central Lumber, Hartrick Lumber and Standard of Beaverdale. For 15 years he worked at Montgomery Wards in Burlington as manager of the TV and Stereo Department.
He was a member of the West Burlington Christian Church for most of his adult life. He served on the West Burlington School Board, as well as on the Board of Adjustments for the City of West Burlington.
The funeral service for Doc will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 15th at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Steve Parker will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service on Friday.
A memorial has been established for the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.
