Obituary
Elizabeth “Betty” Mae Weyls (ne Wethington) died peacefully in Montrose, IA at 8:30 p.m. on December 15, 2020, at the age of 83 years old.
Betty was born on October 15, 1937, in Libertyville, KY to Walter and Stella Wethington. On January 15, 1955, she married Edwin “Ed” L. Weyls in Lafayette, IN. They were married for 59 years before Ed’s passing in 2014.
Betty worked for IRC, Home Care, and as a housekeeper for several local families where she met many of her lifelong friends.
Betty was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 52 for over 60 years, serving as membership chair for over 35 years. For many years Betty organized and cooked the annual early bird dinner for over one hundred members of the American Legion Post 52. She was also member of the Eagles Auxiliary.
Her family and friends describe Betty as kind, supportive, and loving. She loved her family deeply and unconditionally. She had a way of making everyone she met feel like family. Betty loved the peace and quiet of the woods and shared her love of mushroom hunting with her family. She loved music, particularly country gospel music. Betty will be remembered as someone with nearly boundless energy. She was always “doing,” usually doing for others. She enjoyed many hours working hard in the kitchen making her infamous chicken and noodles, potato soup or cookies.
Betty is survived by her daughters, Lora (Phil) Schneider and JoDee Rangel of Burlington; two sons, David (Lisa) Weyls and Tim Weyls of Burlington; 13 grandchildren; Sarah, Emily, Abby, Erin, Derek, T.J., Madisyn, Chloe, Ellie, Quinten, Tia, Brittny, and Ali; 15 great-grandchildren, Gabby, Dylan, Xander, Killian, Kevynn, Karter, Andrew, Evelyn, Max, Mia, Cohen, Mason, Addison, Noah, Isla, Silas; several nieces and nephews and many loving, life-long friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Weyls, her parents, five sisters and two brothers and three great-grandchildren.
Prugh Funeral Services and Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory took care of the arrangements and cremation.
Due to COVID-19, a Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Legion Auxiliary: Girls State, 720 Lyon Street, Des Moines, IA 50309-5417.
