Carl W. Kalkbrenner, 84, of West Burlington, died 10:54 p.m. Thursday, September 20, 2018 at his home.
Born December 21, 1933 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Carl A. and Auguste (Mangl) Kalkbrenner. He married Doris M. Hingst on December 30, 1956 at First United Church of Christ in Burlington.
Carl went to school in West Burlington to the 8th grade and graduated from BHS in 1951. He attended Burlington Junior College. He worked a short time at I.O.P. before being drafted into the Army in 1954. Carl completed Basic Training at Ft. Leonard Wood and Camp Chafee. He was stationed in Japan, Germany, and Korea during the Korean Conflict as SGT before coming home in 1962. He served a total of 7 years, 9 months and 18 days.
Carl was a testing Engineer for J.I. Case proving grounds for 31 years until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, West Burlington. He was a member of the VFW, NRA, past member of Ducks Unlimited.
Carl & Chet Mason helped get the first swimming pool in West Burlington. He got equipment to build the W.B. track. He served on the church council and help get the first girls little league softball in W.B. Carl built their first home in West Burlington in 1962. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and their cabin on Fetters Island.
Survivors include his wife Doris M. Kalkbrenner of West Burlington; daughter, Lisa (Ron Pforts) Kalkbrenner of West Burlington; son, David (Lisa) Kalkbrenner of Winfield; two step grandchildren, Bailey and Forest Hesseltine; two sisters, Ingeborg Zaiser & Rosemary Scarff of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one niece.
A memorial has been established for St. Paul United Church of Christ and the Des Moines County Humane Society.
According to his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.
