Janet H. Smith, 84, of Burlington passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at her home, after a brief battle with lung cancer.
Born December 11, 1933 in West Liberty, Iowa, she was the daughter of Dr. Edward E. and Naomi (Musser) Hale. She married Dr. Gary Smith on September 18, 1955 in West Liberty. He preceded her in death on June 1, 1996.
Janet graduated from West Liberty High School in 1952 and from the University of Iowa in 1955 with her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She worked as a nursing supervisor at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics until her retirement in 1964.
She was a member of West Hill United Methodist Church. She was a 50 year member of Lotus Chapter O.E.S. of West Liberty, a lifetime Girl Scout and belonged to the University of Iowa Alumni Association. Her many hobbies included traveling, entertaining, golfing, bowling, and in her younger years, playing 6 on 6 basketball. She had a passion for sea turtle rescues, and above all loved taking care of her family.
Survivors include son Craig (Julie) Smith and grandchildren, Adam, Hannah, Samantha, and Josh of Burlington; son Brian (Renee) Smith and granddaughter Ruthie of Burlington; daughter Dr. Suzanne (Christopher) Bradbury and grandchildren Regan, Lance, and Lucas of San Diego, CA; sister Mae (Robert) Collins of Ft. Myers, FL; and brother Dr. James Hale of Boonville, AR.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Michele Smith, sister, Ruth Skelley and brother, Edward Hale.
Memorials have been established for Beautiful Burlington Association, Camp L-Kee-Ta and West Hill United Methodist Church.
