Obituary
Jerry Lee Nelson, 75, of Burlington died at 3:50 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, at his home. Born Aug. 15, 1938, in New London, he was the son of Linden "Pug" and Mary Carper Nelson. On Feb. 18, 1966, he married Jackie Anne Mauer in Biggsville, Ill. Mr. Nelson was a postal carrier for the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1996 after 33 years. He was a 1955 graduate of New London High School. He served in the Army Reserves and Iowa National Guard during Desert Storm. He retired with the rank of Sergeant First Class in 1998 after 26 years of service. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Burlington Aerie 150. He enjoyed telling stories and fishing with his friends and grandson. Besides his wife, survivors include two daughters, Stacey Meyer and Lynne Krogmeier, both of Burlington; two grandchildren; two great-grandsons; one sister, Linda Austin of Mesquite, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. Family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at Thielen Funeral Home, with full military honors rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard at 2 p.m. A celebration of life for Mr. Nelson will follow military honors at the Burlington Eagles Club Aerie 150. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory. A memorial has been established for his granddaughter's college. Fund. Thielen Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
